DECEMBER 2021

One thing is definitely crystal clear! The 2021 holiday season is much happier and more fun than the 2020 version! Local favorites like the West Virginia Symphony Orchestra’s performance of Tchaikovsky’s classic “The Nutcracker” featuring the Charleston Ballet, the Appalachian Children’s Chorus Christmas Concert, and Bob Thompson’s “Joy to the World” jazz concerts are all back this year.

On Dec. 7, “Christmas in Appalachia” will be at the Charleston Coliseum & Convention Center (CC&CC). Sponsored by Vision Appalachia, all proceeds go to helping children in the Elk River Valley with backpacks filled with goodies and a Bible for Christmas. Those of Jewish faith celebrate Hanukkah from Nov. 29 to Dec. 6. At the Temple Israel, those who remain unvaccinated may participate via Zoom or Facebook livestream.

The 22nd biennial West Virginia Juried Exhibition at the WV Culture Center features 110 pieces, including painting, mixed media, photography, digital art, sculpture, and much more. This exhibit will remain at the Culture Center until Feb. 19, 2022.

For Baby-Boomers and their families, REO Speedwagon and the country’s first American band to chart albums in SIX consecutive decades, Chicago, come to town this month. The CC&CC is the site for the beloved Christian performer, the Gaither Vocal Band. The holidays just keep getting happier!

The CC&CC is also where Loyalty Over Royalty presents “Ladies Night Out”, starring 112, Jagged Edge, and Dru Hill. And, it is going to be the site for a John Denver Tribute starring Rock Schuler. He weaves Denver’s famous hits and inspirational holiday classics into a wondrous experience not to be missed!

“Mountain Stage” celebrates its 38th anniversary with a terrific line-up including Joshua Radin, Stephen Kellogg, Nefesh Mountain, Mink’s Miracle Medicine, and more. At this concert, the seating will be at 50% capacity and masks are requested. For those unvaccinated, FREE live streaming will be available, and they will be invited back when the time is right.

The Clay Center for the Arts & Sciences will be offering “Holly Days”, festive hands-on activities for children, each Saturday before Christmas. The University of Charleston’s Annual Holiday Gala takes place on Dec. 5, in the UC Ballroom. The University’s Concert Choir and University Singers will perform traditional carols and invite the public to join in. This event is FREE for everyone. UC is requesting all those attending to wear masks.

In Charleston, the Dec. 2021 Holiday Season has so much to offer for all ages and faiths. This year, more families can come together and celebrate like never before!

Happy Holidays!!!
