March 2020

If it is March, springtime is just around the corner! Daffodils, tulips, and forsythia are such a welcome sight driving down Kanawha Boulevard. You may even see kites flying around Magic Island! “Out of the Box”, a wonderful new showcase of antique quilts and other handiwork, begins a two-month long exhibit at the Craik-Patton House. The Clay Center continues to host the “Anne Shreve: A Painter’s Life” until Mar. 8. Also at the Clay Center, “A More Perfect Union: The Moth Mainstage in West Virginia” comes to town. The Moth is a non-profit group based in New York City dedicated to the art and craft of storytelling.

“Disney on Ice Presents DREAM BIG” will be at the Charleston Coliseum & Convention Center (the CC&CC) this month. High-flying jumps, breathtaking ice skating and loveable Disney characters promise to make this event an experience your family will never forget. Another event that will be fun for the whole family is the Clay Center’s screening of the movie “ET, the Extra Terrestrial” with live music performed by WV Symphony Orchestra.

“Let’s Roam Charleston Scavenger Hunt: An Outdoor Activity” is a fun activity for the entire family that can be done on your own at any time or day. Simply download the “Let’s Roam” app, lace up your walking shoes, and experience Charleston like never before. You can snap photos, race against the clock, and  test your navigation skills! The app costs $11. So far, the “Charleston Parkrun” weekly event at Magic Island has been cancelled for the rest of March. Please check for any changes to the April schedule if you are participating in that.

Although it may feel like there is a weird, apocalyptic vibe in town these days, hopefully it will pass soon. In the meantime, take a deep breath (literally), stay in touch with loved ones, help the most vulnerable, and look for ways to be patient and kind. This could be the perfect time to catch up on reading, cooking, or meditating! And, just in case no one else has mentioned it, “WASH YOUR HANDS!”

Who knows? By the end of the month, perhaps we will be talking about how “April simply FLU by!”
