March 2020
If it is March, springtime is just around the corner! Daffodils, tulips, and forsythia are such a welcome sight driving down Kanawha Boulevard. You may even see kites flying around Magic Island! “Out of the Box”, a wonderful new showcase of antique quilts and other handiwork, begins a two-month long exhibit at the Craik-Patton House. The Clay Center continues to host the “Anne Shreve: A Painter’s Life” until Mar. 8. Also at the Clay Center, “A More Perfect Union: The Moth Mainstage in West Virginia” comes to town. The Moth is a non-profit group based in New York City dedicated to the art and craft of storytelling.
“Disney on Ice Presents DREAM BIG” will be at the Charleston Coliseum & Convention Center (the CC&CC) this month. High-flying jumps, breathtaking ice skating and loveable Disney characters promise to make this event an experience your family will never forget. Another event that will be fun for the whole family is the Clay Center’s screening of the movie “ET, the Extra Terrestrial” with live music performed by WV Symphony Orchestra.
“March Madness” comes to Charleston in the form of WVSSAC Boys and Girls Basketball Championships being played at the CC&CC. At Shawnee Park Multi-Sports Complex a new event begins Mar. 11. “Jimmy Callahan’s Ultimate Frisbee Spring Fling” invites players of all ages and experience levels to enter the draft pool for the Spring Session. This coed event will take place weekly and finish with a tournament in May.
Live music continues to be a big part of Charleston culture. “Mountain Stage” has two performances this month. The Main Library has FREE music every Sunday, CTC Mall has a free live concert every third Sunday, but the big event in March will be the “Country Unplugged Featuring Joe Diffie, Mark Chestnutt, and David Lee Murphy” at the Clay Center.
A haunting, full length performance of one of the world’s most romantic ballets “Giselle” comes to the CC&CC Theater complete with iconic costumes and breathtaking music.
There is much to enjoy in Charleston this month. Sports, wonderful music, amazing restaurants, and the beauty of spring unfolding promises to make this an exciting place to be!
